Only the best, Burmese Tectona Grandis, is what we sell at Island Water World. This genuine teak comes from the Burma/Thailand border, which is its natural habitat. Only teak from this area has a very fine silky texture, veiny grain and the rich golden color cherished by boat builders worldwide. It is extremely dense and resilient to weather changes because it has five times more natural oil than most other teaks. Teak was originally introduced to Trinidad in 1913 with seeds imported from Burma. But different soil, water and climatic conditions in Trinidad have produced teak trees markedly different to the ones from Indochina. The grain is coarser, oil content is lower and density and weight were greatly reduced. Color and grain pattern were also altered. True Burmese teak has a narrow, yellow/brown sapwood, which darkens over time. Its grain can be straight or wavy, and often has dark veining throughout its length. Its texture is rough and coarse, but mills to a fine, oily finish, and once sanded, is soft and velvety to the touch. Burmese teak is very strong and durable and superior to most teak found in other regions of the world. This teak is sold by the board foot.
